Digital X-ray Systems

Digital X-rays

A digital X-ray (radiography) or panoramic system can take a picture of your teeth and allow your dentist to show it to you on a computer monitor while you are in the dental chair.  The development process is quick and chemical free.

The on-screen picture will look like an X-ray image but a lot bigger.  With one mouse click, your dentist can zoom in on a single tooth, rotate it, sharpen it and colorize it – all to explain your treatment procedure. Do you need to take home that tooth image?  We can print out a copy for you to take with you.

How It Works

For regular X-rays, your dentist places a small, flat sensor in your mouth which is similar to a regular x-ray film.  An X-ray beam passes through your teeth and into the sensor, which records the image of your teeth.  This film is then processed by our computers to create a digital image that we can display on the computer monitors in our office.

With our Panoramic X-ray, we have you stand in a device which rotates the sensor around your head to capture a complete image of all the teeth and the jaw giving us a full view of your entire mouth.  During this process you can see your image come up on the screen right in front of you.   And, because this system is digital as well, the amount of radiation used is reduced drastically so it is much safer for everyone.

Why It’s Good

Because the Digital X-ray system is more sensitive than X-ray film systems, your exposure to X rays is cut as much as 90 percent (we receive less exposure, too.) The large and color-enhanced images let you see what your dentist sees, so it’s easier for you to understand how your dentist will treat your teeth. You fees don’t include payment for photographic chemicals, film, processing or film storage. Used photo chemicals and film are not dumped into the environment. Finally, it’s a blast to watch this system work!  Most patients are amazed.
