Kim Kardashian, has a long history of saying she can smell cavities. In 2009 she tweeted, “I have a really odd talent. I can smell when someone has cavities! I have never been wrong yet! They don’t even have 2 be super close by me.” But is this true? Can people really smell cavities? Well, let’s understand how cavities form first.  

Cavities

Also known as dental caries or tooth decay, are caused by the breakdown of tooth enamel due to bacterial activity. Typically, cavities do not have a distinct odor that can be smelled directly. However, when tooth decay progresses and reaches more advanced stages, it can lead to certain odors in the mouth.

The presence of bacteria in the mouth

Along with the accumulation of food particles and debris, can contribute to bad breath or an unpleasant taste. These oral symptoms may be associated with dental problems, including cavities. Additionally, if a cavity becomes infected or leads to an abscess, there may be an unpleasant smell associated with the discharge.
